Offered by Women's and Children's Services

Singing River Health System's Women's and Children's Services provides a variety of classes to help you get on your feet as a new mother or as a mother needing a refresher in what to expect. We also offer Safe Sitter Classes for teenagers looking to learn these skills. See the details and schedules below.

Breastfeeding Classes

In this free course, you will learn how to breastfeed your new baby and what to expect when you start breastfeeding. We suggest you come in your seventh month of pregnancy.

Prepared Childbirth Classes

In this free one-day course, you and your partner will learn about the stages of labor, delivery, and recovery, as well as the different types of anesthesia available. You will learn about your newborn’s appearance and general newborn care. The class concludes with a tour of the Labor and Delivery area of the hospital. A continental breakfast will be provided. We suggest you come in your seventh month of pregnancy.

Grandparenting 101 Class

In this fun, interactive class you’ll join fellow grandparents and grandparents-to-be in a discussion about grandparenting the next generation. You’ll also learn important changes in infant care and safety. The class concludes with a tour of the Labor & Delivery area of the hospital. By the end of this class, you should know what to expect and feel prepared to transition into the new role of grandparent. A contintental breakfast will be provided.

• activities for you and your grandchild to enjoy together
• changing relationships
• current trends in infant care
• changes in infant safety and basic safety tips

Safe Sitter Class

This class is for pre-teens and teens up to age 13. The fee is $30 per participant. Participants will learn: basic child care skills, such as diapering and feeding; how to entertain children and keep them safe; and how to call for emergency help. Please be sure to bring a lunch and money for drink. Breakfast items will be available in the morning and cake and punch will be served during the certificate presentation. Parents are invited at 4 p.m. for the certificate presentation.
