Singing River Health System's Regional Cancer Center is the only cancer center on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to offer the Trilogy linear accelerator, the latest advancement in cancer care, to provide you state-of-the-art cancer treatment at home.

The linear accelerator delivers external beam radiation, one method of cancer treatment where targeted radiation beams delivered from outside the body are targeted to the tumor site to kill cancer cells. The Trilogy system offers image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and can treat cancer anywhere in the body.

IMRT is a three-dimensional radiation therapy treatment that allows radiation oncologists to optimize the planning and delivery of high doses of radiation to targeted areas, while minimizing radiation to healthy tissue. IGRT enhances the accuracy of IMRT by using detailed images to target diseases.

The Trilogy Linear Accelerator is superior to other radiation therapy equipment for several reasons. With the Trilogy system, radiation beams match the three-dimensional shape of the tumor with a high degree of accuracy. It also can treat smaller lesions, which allows for treatment at earlier stages when cancer is most curable.

Great precision is possible because of IGRT, the On-board Imager (OBI) and respiratory gating, which allows medical professionals to synchronize treatment with the patient’s breathing cycles. This helps to target tumors more precisely, while sparing healthy tissue.

Additionally, the Trilogy delivers radiation at a rate that is 60 percent faster than traditional linear accelerators, which enhances the patient’s comfort. The highest dose rates can be delivered, so treatments take less time and fewer treatment sessions are needed. Because of the precision of the radiation, healthy tissue is spared, which results in fewer side effects.
