Basic Pulmonary Rehabilitation QuestionsWhat is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program specifically designed and individually tailored to give Education, Exercise and Support to people with pulmonary problems. The education portion of Pulmonary Rehabilitation consists of topics like:
Am I Eligible for Pulmonary Rehab?People with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are among those who benefit from a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Conditions such as Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis, Bronchiectasis and Asthma all fit into the COPD category. People with other breathing disorders may also be admitted to our program depending on the problem, goals and motivation. Limiting conditions may include cancer of major organs and unstable or advanced heart condition. What are the Benefits of Exercise on Pulmonary Status?Exercise benefits the cardiovascular system and the overall muscle tone of the body. When you become inactive breathing may become worse as time passes due to decreased muscle tone, when this happens you tend to sit more allowing others to do more and more of the things you used to do. To stop this deterioration you must get up and get moving! Usually breathing improves as muscles get stronger. Why Should I Attend? It has been shown that people who have attended Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs understand and cope with their disease better, improve their exercise tolerance and are able to carry out activities of daily living with less difficulty. Other benefits may include reduction in anxiety and depression, improvement of self-esteem, decrease in hospitalizations and emergency room visits. What Preparation Do I Need? You will need a referral by your doctor. These can be obtained from the pulmonary clinic or from your primary care office. Several tests are needed to provide a safe and beneficial program for you. These include: • recent chest X-Ray • blood tests • breathing tests. Tests recently done will not be repeated. Initial evaluations will include assessment of activity tolerance and level of self-care. Medication, equipment use and knowledge of disease are also evaluated. What Feedback Will My Doctor Get?Your doctor will get a progress letter sent to him at the end of the course, and as he requests during the course. If we have any questions regarding you or problems, the pulmonary rehabilitation program will always consult with your doctor, also we have our group of pulmonologist available. Where is the Pulmonary Rehab Service?Pulmonary Rehabilitation is provied on the Ground Floor at Singing River Medical Park located at 3101 Denny Avenue, Pascagoula, MS 39581 (see map). Attach a map.
