Surgical Weight Loss

Since 2006, Singing River Hospital and the South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss Center have partnered to offer bariatric surgery for Gulf Coast residents who are significantly overweight. Our services include surgical weight loss procedures and guidance to help patients change their exercise and nutrition habits.

Now, under the leadership and expertise of Medical Director William T. (Pete) Avara III, along with the compassionate care of our clinical staff, the SRH Bariatric Surgery Program has been designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (BSCOE) by the Surgical Review Corporation, a national service which works in conjunction with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This distinction means that our weight loss surgery program has a proven track record in terms of patient safety and outcomes and that our program meets the rigorous requirements and guidelines established by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

This milestone achievement, which was awarded in early 2008, also applies to Dr. Avara and the South Mississippi Weight Loss Center. The Singing River Hospital Bariatric Surgery program is one of only two such programs in Mississippi to receive BSCOE designation.
