Balance/Dizziness Disorders and Treatment

SRHS Neuro Rehab, a function of Rehab Services, provides vestibular rehab, treatment of balance and dizziness dysfunctions, to the Gulf Coast. These problems can be hard to describe but very debilitating for the person experiencing them.

See this video from WLOX: Vestibular Rehab

This rehabilitation treats patients with symptoms of
  • vertigo and positional vertigo (spinning from changes of head position)
  • nausea
  • disequilibrium
  • dizziness
  • veering while walking
  • falling
  • spinning with position changes
  • trouble with rapid head movements
  • spatial disorganization
  • feeling “off”
  • trouble balancing in the dark, in the shower and on grass
  • bouncing in one's visual field

An estimated 20 percent of the population is affected by a vestibular disorder, and after age 60, that jumps to 65 percent. Many times, the patients have seen four physicians and been through numerous tests and even ER visits. Medicine can typically only partially help these issues if at all. For many people this problem spontaneously fixes itself, but for others it can persist for months or years. This rehab helps these patients return to active lifestyles and gives them control and confidence back.

Vestibular problems can also come from inner ear damage that’s a result of bacterial infections, viral infections or more centralized problems like strokes and head trauma/injury.

If you think you might be experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your doctor. A physician referral is required for rehab. For more information, call at 228-818-1207.
