Medical Psychiatric Care Unit - Senior Track
Factors Affecting Our Mental Health Genetics, hormonal factors, negative life events, medical problems, medication, relationships, life adjustments, grief and loss are just a few of the many factors that can dramatically change our mental health. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental illness is the first step toward effective treatment and recovery. Older adults face complex, profound life changes. Often these developmental changes are compounded by medical illnesses that can cause a breakdown in psychological functioning.
The Program The Singing River Health System Medical Psychiatric Care Unit offers acute care to person age 18 years and older. This unit is a Medical/Psych Unit with a Senior Track for persons who need immediate intervention and may require both medical and psychiatric care for services such as IV, oxygen, wound care, and other medical issues. Adults admitted as inpatients receive 24-hour a day supervision in a therapeutic environment. To enhance recovery, they participate in a structured program that includes psychotherapy, problem-solving group activities, and life skills classes.
The Services The Medical Psychiatric Care Unit focuses on enhancing patients' skills and resources to foster personal dignity, control, self-reliance, and quality of life. Under the medical direction of a psychiatrist, the multi-disciplinary treatment team focuses on the individual patient, developing a treatment and discharge plan that includes recommendations for aftercare, follow-up, and community resource integration. Individuals are treated safely and effectively, evaluating, and resolving crisis situations that have occurred precipitating the admission.

- Psychiatric and Medical Evaluation
- Memory Impairment Assessment
- Psychological Testing
- Clinical Social Work Assessment

- Discharge Planning
Discharge and Aftercare The Behavioral Health staff, with your permission, will assist in arranging appointments with a local therapist, psychiatrist, and/or your family physician. This is in preparation for discharge back to the community or to a lower level of care, and to provide the appropriate follow-up needed for your continued good health.
