Adult Behavioral Care Unit

Factors Affecting Our Mental Health
Genetics, hormonal factors, negative life events, medical problems, medication, relationships, life adjustments, grief and loss are just a few of the many factors that can dramatically change our mental health. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental illness is the first step toward effective treatment and recovery. Our focus is to teach patients healthier coping mechanisms, to recognize his/her fears and anxieties, and improve self-esteem.

The Program
The Adult Behavioral Care Unit at Singing River Health System offers acute care to persons age 18 years and older who need immediate intervention. Adults admitted as inpatients receive 24-hour a day supervision in a therapeutic environment. To enhance recovery, they participate in a structured program that includes psychotherapy, problem-solving group activities, and life skills classes.

The Services
The Adult Behavioral Care Unit focuses on enhancing patients' skills and resources to foster personal dignity, control, self-reliance, and quality of life. Under the medical direction of a psychiatrist, the multi-disciplinary treatment team focuses on the individual patient, developing a treatment and discharge plan that includes recommendations for aftercare, follow-up, and community resource integration. Individuals are treated safely and effectively, evaluating, and resolving crisis situations that have occurred precipitating the admission.

Specific services provided by the program include:
  • Individual and Family Therapy
  • Group Psychotherapy
  • Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy
  • Medication Management
  • Psychiatric and Medical Evaluation
  • Memory Impairment Assessment
  • Psychological Testing
  • Clinical Social Work Assessment

Discharge and Aftercare
The Behavioral Health staff, with your permission, will assist in arranging appointments with a local therapist, psychiatrist, and/or your family physician. This is in preparation for discharge back to the community or to a lower level of care, and to provide the appropriate follow-up needed for your continued good health.
