Members will be encouraged to share their experiences with the group as well ask questions to healthcare providers or other members. AARP Driver Safety Class12:00 PM Location: Singing River Medical ParkThis class is for those 50 years and older and is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Participants will learn about maintaining proper following distance at all times, the safest way to change lanes and make turns at intersections, the effects of medications on driving, minimizing the effect of dangerous blind spots, limiting driver distractions such as eating, smoking and cell phone use, properly using safety belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes, maintaining physical flexibility, and continuing to monitor your own and others’ driving skills and capabilities. Prepared Childbirth Class09:00 AM Location: Singing River HospitalPreparing for Childbirth Class. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Singing River Hospital. This free, one-day class is taught by Certified Childbirth Educators (RN's). We suggest you enroll in this class when you are in your 7th month of pregnancy. Mother and coach will learn about the stages of labor, delivery, & recovery, plus different type of anesthesia. You will learn about your newborn's appearance, general newborn care. At the end of class, you will have the opportunity to tour the Labor & Delivery area in the hospital. Lunch break is provided so bring lunch or money for lunch. Pre-registration required. Diabetes Education12:30 PM Location: SRHS Clinics HurleySRHS, in partnership with Gulf Coast Health Educators, is empowering people with diabetes to better manage this disease by offering a free diabetes classes. The "I’m in Control” Diabetes/Pre-Diabetes Education Program can help patients decrease their risk of developing diabetes related complications. Learning diabetes self-management skills can help prevent or delay complications associated with diabetes. The “I’m in Control” program provides an engaging and informative way to learn these skills. Topics include: • how diabetes affects the body • meal planning • exercise • glucose monitoring • medications • goal setting • sick day management • coping with stress Participants also receive: • blood pressure screenings • foot screenings • individualized meal plans Class consists of an initial four-hour session, followed by one and three-month follow-up sessions. Classes are taught by Registered Nurses and Registered Dietitians. Admission is FREE* with an SRHS patient voucher. Aphasia Communication and Support Group04:00 PM Location: neuroscience center 2nd floor conference room (3603 bienville blvd, OS)The group is for people who have been diagnosed with aphasia and we meet monthly for conversation, speech and language activities. People who wish to attend are encouraged to bring any additional communication device they may use (communication board, speech generating device etc.). Caregivers, spouses and/or family generally do not attend the meetings however may provide transportation. The group is led by a speech language pathologist who treats adults with acquired communication impairments following a neurological disorder or diagnosis. Safe Sitter Class08:00 AM Location: Singing River HospitalThis class is for pre-teens and teens up to age 13. The fee is $30 per participant. Participants will learn: basic child care skills, such as diapering and feeding; how to entertain children and keep them safe; and how to call for emergency help. Please be sure to bring a lunch and money for drink. Breakfast items will be available in the morning and cake and punch will be served during the certificate presentation. Parents are invited at 4 p.m. for the certificate presentation.

Grandparenting 101 Class09:00 AM Location: Singing River HospitalIn this fun, interactive class you’ll join fellow grandparents and grandparents-to-be in a discussion about grandparenting the next generation. You’ll also learn important changes in infant care and safety. The class concludes with a tour of the Labor & Delivery area of the hospital. By the end of this class, you should know what to expect and feel prepared to transition into the new role of grandparent. A contintental breakfast will be provided. Learn: • the many roles of the grandparent • activities for you and your grandchild to enjoy together • changing relationships • current trends in infant care • changes in infant safety and basic safety tips |
